One of the most rewarding aspects of being a veterinarian is the opportunity to provide treatments that may not only extend a cat’s life but also deepen the bond they share with their caregivers. Some of these treatments may require anesthesia to prevent unnecessary stress and provide lifesaving care.

Anesthesia is a carefully monitored procedure that allows your cat to remain pain-free, allowing us to provide the best possible care without fear or distress.

It’s completely natural to feel nervous about anesthesia - we understand how nerve-wracking it can be for cat caregivers. As a veterinarian with over 23 years of experience, I want to reassure you - while anesthesia does carry some risks, it is sometimes the most cat-friendly way to provide pain free lifesaving or life-improving care.

Ultimately, if we feel anesthesia is necessary, it is because we prioritize your cat’s comfort, well-being, and overall quality of life. At Cat Care Center, we take every step possible to ensure a safe, smooth, and cat friendly experience for your cat.

Why Anesthesia is Necessary

Cats are masters of disguise when it comes to pain and discomfort.  This makes routine and diagnostic care even more essential. Anesthesia is a tool that allows us to perform procedures like recommended dental cleanings, surgeries, and ultrasounds without causing avoidable stress or pain. We work to make the experience as positive as possible for your cat (and you, too!) Your cat’s emotional well-being matters just as much to us as their physical health.

Individualized Care for Every Cat

Every cat deserves care tailored to their unique needs. Just like no two cats are alike, no two anesthesia plans should be either. We consider factors like your cat’s age, breed, and medical history when creating an individualized protocol. Whether your senior kitty has early kidney disease, or your playful tabby is in perfect health, our anesthesia plans are designed with their specific well-being in mind.

Steps to Minimize Stress

We focus on reducing unnecessary stress before, during, and after the procedure. Pre-visit  medications like Gabapentin may help calm your cat’s anxiety before their appointment. When they arrive, we ensure a quiet, cozy environment. If they prefer, we are happy to allow them to remain in their carrier for their comfort. If your cat has a favorite bed, stuffed toy, etc., we’re happy to keep it by their side. Warm blankets, dim lighting, and minimizing noise are small but impactful ways we keep cats at ease.

A low-stress experience is not just kinder; it can lead to less anesthesia requirements, better outcomes, and a safer, smoother recovery.

Advanced Monitoring

During anesthesia, your cat is never alone. They are continuously monitored with advanced equipment that tracks their heart rate, heart rhythm, blood pressure, Oxygen levels, CO2 levels and body temperature. Each patient has a dedicated veterinary nurse who stays by their side from start to finish to ensure their safety and respond immediately to any changes observed during the anesthetic procedure.

Post-Anesthesia Recovery

The first few hours after anesthesia are especially important! As your cat wakes up, we keep a close eye on their vital signs, body temperature, blood pressure, and overall comfort to make sure they recover smoothly and pain free. Before heading home, your nurse will walk you through everything you need to know - pain management, medications needed and potential side effects, and how to help them settle back in with other pets in your home. We are happy to answer any questions, and we will also send you home with a folder full of helpful resources. Our goal is to make your cat’s transition home as easy and stress-free as possible for you and them!

Risks Involved with Anesthesia

As with any medical procedure, anesthesia does come with some risks, including the possibility of an adverse reaction to anesthetic drugs or other rare complications. To ensure the safest experience possible, your veterinarian will perform a thorough exam, review your cat’s medical history, and may recommend additional tests to check for hidden underlying conditions. These precautions allow us to create a personalized anesthesia plan tailored to your cat’s needs. At Cat Care Center, we take every possible step to minimize risks and ensure their safety, providing detailed pre-procedure instructions to help set them up for a smooth experience.

Your Peace of Mind

Communication is very important to us! We are dedicated to keeping you informed every step of the way - before, during, and after your cat’s procedure. We take the time to explain the process, answer your questions, and follow up to ensure your cat is recovering smoothly. Our commitment is to provide the safest care possible while giving you confidence and peace of mind in the care your cat receives.
